Budget Friendly Bedroom Makeover

Today I’m sharing our budget friendly bedroom makeover!  We actually use a secondary bedroom as our main bedroom, because it has big beautiful windows and a gorgeous view that the primary bedroom in this floor plan does not offer.  But the previous owners used it as a nursery:

“Before”

Process:

After removing the wallpaper border (thanks mom & dad!), painting everything a crisp white and installing hardwood floors (see how we installed new wood floors here), we have a clean & bright canvas to work with.

In progress . . .
My mom, hard at work!
Hello floors!

Closet Makeover:

The closet got a little makeover as well!

First Version:

After designing this headboard, I struggle to find bedding that complemented it!  This black and white duvet was my third attempt and, after so much renovating, I did not have the budget to do much.  We bought new lamps and a new curtain rod, but that pretty much drained the decor budget.

My mom & I designed the headboard & side tables which were handmade by my grandpa

This room has the biggest window in the house, emphasized by the wall-to-wall curtains my grandmother sewed for us

Second Version:

I finally found the right bedding: a textures, ruched white duvet and sham set with square pattern!  Textured and interesting, but so subtle the headboard remains the focus!  I also painted some bright and bold abstracts to add more color and my Mom and I sewed colorful throw pillows!

  1. Do keep the bedding! It's just perfect. Add color via flowers, a vase, a throw, maybe a rug, cushions, art, but DO KEEP THE BEDDING.

  2. have you been a skilled painter for years and years? or is this a relatively new hobby for you?

  3. Hi Ashlee (house no. 2). You are too kind. I have always enjoyed art projects, even as a child, but I wouldn't call myself skilled. It comes and goes – some paintings I love, some are so ugly they never see the light of day. I picked up painting again about 10 years ago, but paint off and on. Probably only an average of a few times/year.
